The Canadian Army needed to combine the former Thales Athena Tactical System with the CGI operational planning application, OPERA (Operational Planning Environment and Reference Application). BattleView provides the answer with a primary command and control (C2) application for the Canadian Army, deployed in battle groups and at higher-level headquarters.
In the current implementation of BattleView, the main challenges included:
- Migrating from a C++ to a C#/.
- Net development environment; transitioning from Win 2K to Win XP Operating System;
- migrating from a Structure Architecture to a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) approach;
- implementing the C2IEDM GH 6 (versus the LC2IEDM GH 4 in prior version);
- and fully integrating the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) COTS GIS (adding the development of a framework and tools, for which Thales shared the 2006 ESRI Award of Excellence with the Canadian Department of National Defence).
The new combined release integrates the two key functionalities, Athena and Opera, into a single application. Both applications have been deployed in the Canadian Army, including the current Afghanistan mission. BattleView provides complete battle space situation awareness, a fully integrated Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) Geographic Information System (GIS), and enhances battle management and operational planning. BattleView adopts a new architecture based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).
The new architecture in BattleView provides the capacity to easily and efficiently integrate functional services.
The Thales' team provides architecture expertise, a strong development team, significant Command and Control (C2) domain expertise and a reputation for excellent product quality. Thales understands customer requirements and assists in facilitating the integration of other C2 applications through close working relationships with other industry partners. The strengths of the Thales' team in Software application integration and its approach to quality ensure high customer satisfaction.
